Who is covered by my personal auto insurance policy?
We get this question a lot, and it is usually a question that comes after an accident. It’s important to understand who is covered before an auto accident.
Generally speaking, the first named insured on the auto policy, their spouse, any relatives residing in the home, and unmarried, unemancipated children attending school full time, living away from home, would be considered covered under a personal auto insurance policy. However, each company looks at drivers differently and it is critical you understand how your company defines covered drivers on your policy.
The surest way to know if a driver is covered under your auto policy is to call your agent and add that driver to your auto insurance policy. In this way, you’ll be certain that should a loss occur with a specific driver behind the wheel of a covered auto, coverage will be afforded up to the limits you selected.
There are instances where an unlisted driver may be covered while operating an insured vehicle on your personal auto policy. An example would be a non-resident of the household to whom you give permission to drive a covered auto. As long as their usage cannot be construed as “regular and customary”, then coverage may apply. The “regular and customary” definition varies between companies. As such, if you regularly loan your auto to someone who is outside the household it is always wise to check with your insurance agent to be certain coverage would be afforded (or provided) in the event of a loss.
Keep in mind that your insurance covers not only the auto itself, but the bodily injury and property damage arising out of the use (or misuse) of that vehicle. What would happen to you if your vehicle were involved in a significant auto accident and you didn’t have the right coverage in place? In simple terms it could be financially devastating to you and your family.

I entrust Rob Stone and Covenant Insurance with ALL of my insurance needs, both personally and professionally.
I have really enjoyed having Rob as an insurance man. His friendly and helpful attitude is always appreciated. When we moved into our new home and had a glitch, Rob went above and beyond to insure that we could move on time. I’ve never forgotten his “can do” for our family.
I have been here for a long long time. I’m very pleased with my insurance company (Erie/Covenant). I will never have to get anyone else.
